From the National Archives

President Garfield was shot by an assassin on July 2, 1881, and died from his wounds on September 19, 1881. He was succeeded by Vice President Arthur, who took the oath of office formally in New York City, on September 20, 1881, and again ceremonially in Washington, DC, on September 22, 1881.
