The 2016 contest saw California line up behind Clinton, delivering 55 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Donald Trump (Republican) won nationally, while California had backed a different ticket.

California stayed in the Democratic column for the 7th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1992. The region divided — Oregon and Nevada joined California for the Democratic ticket, while Arizona did not. Over its 44 recorded presidential cycles, California has backed the Republican party more than any other — 22 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Donald Trump finished with 304 of the 538 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton's 227. Though Donald Trump won the Electoral College, Hillary Clinton drew more of the national popular vote — 48.18% to 46.09%.
