In 2012, Florida awarded its 29 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. That placed Florida with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and Florida was part of his column.

Florida stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 2008. It stood apart from its neighbors: Alabama and Georgia went the other way that year. Over its 45 recorded presidential cycles, Florida has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

Nationally, Barack Obama finished with 332 of the 538 electoral votes to Mitt Romney's 206. Barack Obama led the national popular vote with 51.06% of the ballots cast.
