The 2012 contest saw Alabama line up behind Romney, delivering 9 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Barack Obama (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Alabama among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Alabama backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1996. The region divided — Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia joined Alabama for the Republican ticket, while Florida did not.
