In 2008, New Mexico awarded its 5 electoral votes to Obama of the Democratic party. That placed New Mexico with the eventual winner: Barack Obama went on to take the presidency, and New Mexico was part of his column.

The result flipped New Mexico away from the Republican it had supported in 2004. The region divided — Colorado joined New Mexico for the Democratic ticket, while Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, and Texas did not. Over its 29 recorded presidential cycles, New Mexico has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 17 times in all.
