In 1996, New Mexico awarded its 5 electoral votes to Clinton of the Democratic party. New Mexico ended up on the winning side — Bill Clinton captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which New Mexico backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1992. It stood apart from its neighbors: Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas went the other way that year. Across the 29 presidential elections New Mexico has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (17 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Bill Clinton took 379 of the 538 electoral votes, against Bob Dole's 159. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 49.23% of the ballots cast.
