In 2008, Alaska awarded its 3 electoral votes to McCain of the Republican party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Barack Obama (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Alaska among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 11th consecutive election in which Alaska backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968. Across the 17 presidential elections Alaska has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (16 times).
