In 2004, New Hampshire awarded its 4 electoral votes to Kerry of the Democratic party. Nationally the result broke the other way — George W. Bush (Republican) won the presidency, leaving New Hampshire among the states he did not carry.

The result flipped New Hampshire away from the Republican it had supported in 2000. New Hampshire did not move alone — neighboring Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine broke the same way in 2004.
