Maine in 1968

The 1968 contest saw Maine line up behind Humphrey, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Richard Nixon (Republican) won the presidency, leaving Maine among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Maine backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1960. It stood apart from its neighbors: New Hampshire went the other way that year. Across the 52 presidential elections Maine has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (29 times). The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.

In the national count, Richard Nixon took 301 of the 538 electoral votes, against Hubert Humphrey's 191. Richard Nixon led the national popular vote with 43.42% of the ballots cast.
