Alabama in 1964

The 1964 contest saw Alabama line up behind Goldwater, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Lyndon B. Johnson (Democratic) won nationally, while Alabama had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped Alabama away from the Democratic ticket it had backed in each of the previous 3 cycles. The region divided — Mississippi and Georgia joined Alabama for the Republican ticket, while Tennessee and Florida did not. Over its 51 recorded presidential cycles, Alabama has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Lyndon B. Johnson finished with 486 of the 538 electoral votes to Barry Goldwater's 52. Lyndon B. Johnson led the national popular vote with 61.05% of the ballots cast.
