Wisconsin in 1956

The 1956 contest saw Wisconsin line up behind Eisenhower, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Wisconsin with the eventual winner: Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to take the presidency, and Wisconsin was part of his column.

Wisconsin stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1952. The region divided — Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan joined Wisconsin for the Republican ticket, while Minnesota did not. Over its 45 recorded presidential cycles, Wisconsin has backed the Republican party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Dwight D. Eisenhower finished with 457 of the 531 electoral votes to Adlai Stevenson II's 73. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the national popular vote with 57.37% of the ballots cast.
