Idaho in 1948

The 1948 contest saw Idaho line up behind Truman, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Idaho with the eventual winner: Harry S. Truman went on to take the presidency, and Idaho was part of his column.

Idaho stayed in the Democratic column for the 5th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1932. The region divided — Washington, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana joined Idaho for the Democratic ticket, while Oregon did not. Over its 34 recorded presidential cycles, Idaho has backed the Republican party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Harry S. Truman finished with 303 of the 531 electoral votes to Thomas E. Dewey's 189. Harry S. Truman led the national popular vote with 49.55% of the ballots cast.
