What happened in Kansas, 1936

In 1936, Kansas awarded its 9 electoral votes to Landon of the Republican party. The presidency went elsewhere: Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democratic) won nationally, while Kansas had backed a different ticket.

The result flipped Kansas away from the Democratic it had supported in 1932. It stood apart from its neighbors: Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado went the other way that year. Over its 41 recorded presidential cycles, Kansas has backed the Republican party more than any other — 34 times in all. The vote fell within the New Deal Coalition — FDR, civil rights, and the long Democratic majority.

Nationally, Franklin D. Roosevelt finished with 523 of the 531 electoral votes to Alf Landon's 8. Franklin D. Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 60.8% of the ballots cast.
