1928
What happened in Pennsylvania, 1928
In 1928, Pennsylvania awarded its 38 electoral votes to Hoover of the Republican party. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: Herbert Hoover went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.
Pennsylvania stayed in the Republican column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1916. Pennsylvania did not move alone — neighboring Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York broke the same way in 1928. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Pennsylvania has backed the Republican party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.
Nationally, Herbert Hoover finished with 444 of the 531 electoral votes to Al Smith's 87. Herbert Hoover led the national popular vote with 58.21% of the ballots cast.
