In 1928, Pennsylvania awarded its 38 electoral votes to Hoover of the Republican party. That placed Pennsylvania with the eventual winner: Herbert Hoover went on to take the presidency, and Pennsylvania was part of his column.

Pennsylvania stayed in the Republican column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1916. Pennsylvania did not move alone — neighboring Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and New York broke the same way in 1928.
