1928
Reading the 1928 result in New Mexico
New Mexico backed Hoover (Republican) in the 1928 presidential election, casting 3 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed New Mexico with the eventual winner: Herbert Hoover went on to take the presidency, and New Mexico was part of his column.
New Mexico stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1920. The region divided — Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas joined New Mexico for the Republican ticket, while Arizona did not. Over its 29 recorded presidential cycles, New Mexico has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 17 times in all. The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.
Nationally, Herbert Hoover finished with 444 of the 531 electoral votes to Al Smith's 87. Herbert Hoover led the national popular vote with 58.21% of the ballots cast.
