In 1924, South Carolina awarded its 9 electoral votes to Davis of the Democratic party. Nationally the result broke the other way — Calvin Coolidge (Republican) won the presidency, leaving South Carolina among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 12th consecutive election in which South Carolina backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1880. South Carolina did not move alone — neighboring Georgia and North Carolina broke the same way in 1924. Across the 59 presidential elections South Carolina has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (28 times). The vote fell within the Roaring Twenties — Republican dominance to the Great Depression.
