Nebraska in 1916
The 1916 contest saw Nebraska line up behind Wilson, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Nebraska ended up on the winning side — Woodrow Wilson captured the White House that year.
It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Nebraska backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1908. The region divided — Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming joined Nebraska for the Democratic ticket, while South Dakota and Iowa did not. Across the 40 presidential elections Nebraska has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (31 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.
In the national count, Woodrow Wilson took 277 of the 531 electoral votes, against Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
