The 1916 contest saw Louisiana line up behind Wilson, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Louisiana ended up on the winning side — Woodrow Wilson captured the White House that year.

It marked the 10th consecutive election in which Louisiana backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1880. Louisiana did not move alone — neighboring Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi broke the same way in 1916. Across the 53 presidential elections Louisiana has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (29 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

In the national count, Woodrow Wilson took 277 of the 531 electoral votes, against Charles Evans Hughes's 254. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 49.24% of the ballots cast.
