What happened in Wisconsin, 1912

In 1912, Wisconsin awarded its 13 electoral votes to Wilson of the Democratic party. That placed Wisconsin with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Wisconsin was part of his column.

The result flipped Wisconsin away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 4 cycles. The region divided — Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan joined Wisconsin for the Democratic ticket, while Minnesota did not. Over its 45 recorded presidential cycles, Wisconsin has backed the Republican party more than any other — 24 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 435 of the 531 electoral votes to Theodore Roosevelt's 88. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 41.84% of the ballots cast.
