Mississippi in 1912

The 1912 contest saw Mississippi line up behind Wilson, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Mississippi with the eventual winner: Woodrow Wilson went on to take the presidency, and Mississippi was part of his column.

Mississippi stayed in the Democratic column for the 10th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1876. Mississippi did not move alone — neighboring Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alabama broke the same way in 1912. Over its 51 recorded presidential cycles, Mississippi has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 30 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Woodrow Wilson finished with 435 of the 531 electoral votes to Theodore Roosevelt's 88. Woodrow Wilson led the national popular vote with 41.84% of the ballots cast.
