Washington in 1904

The 1904 contest saw Washington line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 5 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Washington ended up on the winning side — Theodore Roosevelt captured the White House that year.

It marked the 4th consecutive election in which Washington backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1892. Washington did not move alone — neighboring Oregon and Idaho broke the same way in 1904. Across the 34 presidential elections Washington has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (19 times). The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

In the national count, Theodore Roosevelt took 336 of the 476 electoral votes, against Alton B. Parker's 140. Theodore Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 56.42% of the ballots cast.
