1904
What happened in Delaware, 1904
In 1904, Delaware awarded its 3 electoral votes to Roosevelt of the Republican party. That placed Delaware with the eventual winner: Theodore Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Delaware was part of his column.
Delaware stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1896. The region divided — Pennsylvania and New Jersey joined Delaware for the Republican ticket, while Maryland did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Delaware has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.
Nationally, Theodore Roosevelt finished with 336 of the 476 electoral votes to Alton B. Parker's 140. Theodore Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 56.42% of the ballots cast.
