1872
Reading the 1872 result in North Carolina
North Carolina backed Grant (Republican) in the 1872 presidential election, casting 10 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.
North Carolina stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1868. The region divided — South Carolina joined North Carolina for the Republican ticket, while Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia did not. Over its 58 recorded presidential cycles, North Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 286 of the 352 electoral votes to Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
