In 1856, North Carolina awarded its 10 electoral votes to Buchanan of the Democratic party. That placed North Carolina with the eventual winner: James Buchanan went on to take the presidency, and North Carolina was part of his column.

North Carolina stayed in the Democratic column for the 8th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1828.
