1868
Reading the 1868 result in Kentucky
Kentucky backed Seymour (Democratic) in the 1868 presidential election, casting 11 electoral votes for the ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) won nationally, while Kentucky had backed a different ticket.
Kentucky stayed in the Democratic column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1864. The region divided — Indiana joined Kentucky for the Democratic ticket, while Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, and Illinois did not. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Kentucky has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 214 of the 294 electoral votes to Horatio Seymour's 80. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 52.66% of the ballots cast.
