1864
What happened in Kentucky, 1864
In 1864, Kentucky awarded its 11 electoral votes to McClellan of the Democratic party. The presidency went elsewhere: Abraham Lincoln (Republican) won nationally, while Kentucky had backed a different ticket.
The result flipped Kentucky away from the Constitutional Union it had supported in 1860. It stood apart from its neighbors: Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Missouri, and Illinois went the other way that year. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Kentucky has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Civil War — Lincoln, war, and Reconstruction begins.
Nationally, Abraham Lincoln finished with 212 of the 233 electoral votes to George B. McClellan's 21. Abraham Lincoln led the national popular vote with 55.03% of the ballots cast.
