New Jersey in 1848

The 1848 contest saw New Jersey line up behind Taylor, delivering 7 electoral votes to the Whig ticket. That placed New Jersey with the eventual winner: Zachary Taylor went on to take the presidency, and New Jersey was part of his column.

The result flipped New Jersey away from the Democratic it had supported in 1844. New Jersey did not move alone — neighboring New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware broke the same way in 1848. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New Jersey has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.

Nationally, Zachary Taylor finished with 163 of the 290 electoral votes to Lewis Cass's 127. Zachary Taylor led the national popular vote with 47.28% of the ballots cast.
