What happened in Louisiana, 1848

In 1848, Louisiana awarded its 6 electoral votes to Taylor of the Whig party. Louisiana ended up on the winning side — Zachary Taylor captured the White House that year.

The result flipped Louisiana away from the Democratic it had supported in 1844. It stood apart from its neighbors: Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi went the other way that year. Across the 53 presidential elections Louisiana has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (29 times). The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.

In the national count, Zachary Taylor took 163 of the 290 electoral votes, against Lewis Cass's 127. Zachary Taylor led the national popular vote with 47.28% of the ballots cast.
