1840
Reading the 1840 result in New Hampshire
New Hampshire backed VanBuren (Democratic) in the 1840 presidential election, casting 7 electoral votes for the ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: William Henry Harrison (Whig) won nationally, while New Hampshire had backed a different ticket.
New Hampshire stayed in the Democratic column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1832. It stood apart from its neighbors: Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine went the other way that year. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, New Hampshire has backed the Republican party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.
Nationally, William Henry Harrison finished with 234 of the 294 electoral votes to Martin Van Buren's 60. William Henry Harrison led the national popular vote with 52.87% of the ballots cast.
