1820
Connecticut in 1820
The 1820 contest saw Connecticut line up behind Monroe, delivering 9 electoral votes to the Democratic-Republican ticket. Connecticut ended up on the winning side — James Monroe captured the White House that year.
Monroe's win closed out Connecticut's 6-election run of voting Federalist. Connecticut did not move alone — neighboring New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island broke the same way in 1820. Across the 60 presidential elections Connecticut has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (24 times). The vote fell within the Era of Good Feelings — One-party rule and the Corrupt Bargain.
In the national count, James Monroe took 231 of the 232 electoral votes, against John Quincy Adams's 1.
