New Jersey in 1800
The 1800 contest saw New Jersey line up behind Adams, delivering 7 electoral votes to the Federalist ticket. The presidency went elsewhere: Thomas Jefferson (Democratic-Republican) won nationally, while New Jersey had backed a different ticket.
New Jersey stayed in the Federalist column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1796. The region divided — Delaware joined New Jersey for the Federalist ticket, while New York and Pennsylvania did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New Jersey has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 31 times in all. The vote fell within the First Party System — Federalists vs Democratic-Republicans.
With no candidate reaching an Electoral College majority, the 1800 election was decided in the House of Representatives.
