The 2020 contest saw Mississippi line up behind Trump, delivering 6 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Joe Biden (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving Mississippi among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 11th consecutive election in which Mississippi backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1980. Mississippi did not move alone — neighboring Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alabama broke the same way in 2020. Across the 51 presidential elections Mississippi has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (30 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.

In the national count, Joe Biden took 306 of the 538 electoral votes, against Donald Trump's 232. Joe Biden led the national popular vote with 51.31% of the ballots cast.
