Reading the 2020 result in Michigan
Michigan backed Biden (Democratic) in the 2020 presidential election, casting 16 electoral votes for the ticket. Michigan ended up on the winning side — Joe Biden captured the White House that year.
The result flipped Michigan away from the Republican it had supported in 2016. The region divided — Wisconsin joined Michigan for the Democratic ticket, while Indiana and Ohio did not. Across the 51 presidential elections Michigan has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (28 times). The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
In the national count, Joe Biden took 306 of the 538 electoral votes, against Donald Trump's 232. Joe Biden led the national popular vote with 51.31% of the ballots cast.
