The 2004 contest saw Tennessee line up behind Bush, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Tennessee ended up on the winning side — George W. Bush captured the White House that year.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which Tennessee backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 2000. Tennessee did not move alone — neighboring Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri broke the same way in 2004. Across the 57 presidential elections Tennessee has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (24 times). In the national count, George W. Bush took 286 of the 538 electoral votes, against John Kerry's 251. George W. Bush led the national popular vote with 50.73% of the ballots cast.
