The 1996 contest saw Rhode Island line up behind Clinton, delivering 4 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. Rhode Island ended up on the winning side — Bill Clinton captured the White House that year.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Rhode Island backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1988.
