1992
Kentucky in 1992
The 1992 contest saw Kentucky line up behind Clinton, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Democratic ticket. That placed Kentucky with the eventual winner: Bill Clinton went on to take the presidency, and Kentucky was part of his column.
The result flipped Kentucky away from the Republican ticket it had backed in each of the previous 3 cycles. The region divided — Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, and Illinois joined Kentucky for the Democratic ticket, while Indiana and Virginia did not. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, Kentucky has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Modern Polarization — Close elections in a divided country.
Nationally, Bill Clinton finished with 370 of the 538 electoral votes to George H. W. Bush's 168. Bill Clinton led the national popular vote with 43.01% of the ballots cast.
