1984
Iowa in 1984
The 1984 contest saw Iowa line up behind Reagan, delivering 8 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Iowa ended up on the winning side — Ronald Reagan captured the White House that year.
It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Iowa backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1968. The region divided — Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota joined Iowa for the Republican ticket, while Minnesota did not. Across the 47 presidential elections Iowa has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (32 times). The vote fell within the Cold War Realignment — Nixon, Reagan, and the Republican South.
In the national count, Ronald Reagan took 525 of the 538 electoral votes, against Walter Mondale's 13. Ronald Reagan led the national popular vote with 58.77% of the ballots cast.
