New York in 1908

The 1908 contest saw New York line up behind Taft, delivering 39 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed New York with the eventual winner: William Howard Taft went on to take the presidency, and New York was part of his column.

New York stayed in the Republican column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1896. New York did not move alone — neighboring Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont broke the same way in 1908. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New York has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 29 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, William Howard Taft finished with 321 of the 483 electoral votes to William Jennings Bryan's 162. William Howard Taft led the national popular vote with 51.57% of the ballots cast.
