Minnesota in 1908

The 1908 contest saw Minnesota line up behind Taft, delivering 11 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Minnesota with the eventual winner: William Howard Taft went on to take the presidency, and Minnesota was part of his column.

Minnesota stayed in the Republican column for the 14th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1856. Minnesota did not move alone — neighboring North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin broke the same way in 1908. Over its 43 recorded presidential cycles, Minnesota has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, William Howard Taft finished with 321 of the 483 electoral votes to William Jennings Bryan's 162. William Howard Taft led the national popular vote with 51.57% of the ballots cast.
