Indiana in 1908

The 1908 contest saw Indiana line up behind Taft, delivering 15 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Indiana with the eventual winner: William Howard Taft went on to take the presidency, and Indiana was part of his column.

Indiana stayed in the Republican column for the 4th straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1896. The region divided — Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan joined Indiana for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Indiana has backed the Republican party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, William Howard Taft finished with 321 of the 483 electoral votes to William Jennings Bryan's 162. William Howard Taft led the national popular vote with 51.57% of the ballots cast.
