Illinois in 1904

The 1904 contest saw Illinois line up behind Roosevelt, delivering 27 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Illinois with the eventual winner: Theodore Roosevelt went on to take the presidency, and Illinois was part of his column.

Illinois stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1896. The region divided — Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana joined Illinois for the Republican ticket, while Missouri and Kentucky did not. Over its 53 recorded presidential cycles, Illinois has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 26 times in all. The vote fell within the Progressive Era — Trust-busting, suffrage, and World War I.

Nationally, Theodore Roosevelt finished with 336 of the 476 electoral votes to Alton B. Parker's 140. Theodore Roosevelt led the national popular vote with 56.42% of the ballots cast.
