The 1872 contest saw Wisconsin line up behind Grant, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Wisconsin ended up on the winning side — Ulysses S. Grant captured the White House that year.

It marked the 5th consecutive election in which Wisconsin backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1856. Wisconsin did not move alone — neighboring Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan broke the same way in 1872. Across the 45 presidential elections Wisconsin has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Republican party (24 times). The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.

In the national count, Ulysses S. Grant took 286 of the 352 electoral votes, against Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
