New York in 1872

The 1872 contest saw New York line up behind Grant, delivering 35 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed New York with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and New York was part of his column.

The result flipped New York away from the Democratic it had supported in 1868. The region divided — Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont joined New York for the Republican ticket, while New Jersey did not. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, New York has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 29 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.

Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 286 of the 352 electoral votes to Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
