1872
What happened in Arkansas, 1872
In 1872, Arkansas awarded its 6 electoral votes to Grant of the Republican party. That placed Arkansas with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and Arkansas was part of his column.
Arkansas stayed in the Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1868. The region divided — Mississippi and Louisiana joined Arkansas for the Republican ticket, while Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas did not. Over its 47 recorded presidential cycles, Arkansas has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 32 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 286 of the 352 electoral votes to Thomas A. Hendricks's 42. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 55.58% of the ballots cast.
