1868
Reading the 1868 result in South Carolina
South Carolina backed Grant (Republican) in the 1868 presidential election, casting 6 electoral votes for the ticket. That placed South Carolina with the eventual winner: Ulysses S. Grant went on to take the presidency, and South Carolina was part of his column.
The result flipped South Carolina away from the Southern Democratic it had supported in 1860. The region divided — North Carolina joined South Carolina for the Republican ticket, while Georgia did not. Over its 59 recorded presidential cycles, South Carolina has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 28 times in all. The vote fell within the Reconstruction — Republican rule and contested returns.
Nationally, Ulysses S. Grant finished with 214 of the 294 electoral votes to Horatio Seymour's 80. Ulysses S. Grant led the national popular vote with 52.66% of the ballots cast.
