The 1868 contest saw Illinois line up behind Grant, delivering 16 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. Illinois ended up on the winning side — Ulysses S. Grant captured the White House that year.

It marked the 3rd consecutive election in which Illinois backed the Republican party, a streak reaching back to 1860. The region divided — Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri joined Illinois for the Republican ticket, while Kentucky and Indiana did not.
