Massachusetts in 1864
The 1864 contest saw Massachusetts line up behind Lincoln, delivering 12 electoral votes to the Republican ticket. That placed Massachusetts with the eventual winner: Abraham Lincoln went on to take the presidency, and Massachusetts was part of his column.
Massachusetts stayed in the Republican column for the 3rd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1856. Massachusetts did not move alone — neighboring Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire broke the same way in 1864. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Massachusetts has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Civil War — Lincoln, war, and Reconstruction begins.
Nationally, Abraham Lincoln finished with 212 of the 233 electoral votes to George B. McClellan's 21. Abraham Lincoln led the national popular vote with 55.03% of the ballots cast.
