Reading the 1832 result in South Carolina

South Carolina backed Wirt (Democratic) in the 1832 presidential election, casting 11 electoral votes for the ticket. Nationally the result broke the other way — Andrew Jackson (Democratic) won the presidency, leaving South Carolina among the states he did not carry.

It marked the 2nd consecutive election in which South Carolina backed the Democratic party, a streak reaching back to 1828. South Carolina did not move alone — neighboring Georgia and North Carolina broke the same way in 1832. Across the 59 presidential elections South Carolina has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (28 times). The vote fell within the Second Party System — Jackson, Whigs, and the rise of mass politics.

In the national count, Andrew Jackson took 219 of the 286 electoral votes, against Henry Clay's 49. Andrew Jackson led the national popular vote with 54.74% of the ballots cast.
