1824
Maine in 1824
The 1824 contest saw Maine line up behind Adams, delivering 9 electoral votes to the Democratic-Republican ticket. That placed Maine with the eventual winner: John Quincy Adams went on to take the presidency, and Maine was part of his column.
Maine stayed in the Democratic-Republican column for the 2nd straight cycle, extending a run that began in 1820. Maine did not move alone — neighboring New Hampshire broke the same way in 1824. Over its 52 recorded presidential cycles, Maine has backed the Republican party more than any other — 29 times in all. The vote fell within the Era of Good Feelings — One-party rule and the Corrupt Bargain.
With no candidate reaching an Electoral College majority, the 1824 election was decided in the House of Representatives.
