1820
What happened in Massachusetts, 1820
In 1820, Massachusetts awarded its 15 electoral votes to Monroe of the Democratic-Republican party. That placed Massachusetts with the eventual winner: James Monroe went on to take the presidency, and Massachusetts was part of his column.
The result flipped Massachusetts away from the Federalist ticket it had backed in each of the previous 6 cycles. Massachusetts did not move alone — neighboring Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire broke the same way in 1820. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Massachusetts has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the Era of Good Feelings — One-party rule and the Corrupt Bargain.
Nationally, James Monroe finished with 231 of the 232 electoral votes to John Quincy Adams's 1.
